Snapdragon 855 ufficiale: 5G e lettore di impronte sotto il display
Dalla consueta presentazione alle Hawaii, Qualcomm ha svelato il suo nuovo SoC top di gamma, che troveremo a bordo di tutti i dispositivi più potenti del 2019: lo Snapdragon 855. A scanso di equivoci: sì, il nome commerciale è proprio Snapdragon 855, e non Snapdragon 8150 come precedentemente trapelato (8150 sarebbe solo una sigla per uso interno).
Lo Snapdragon 855 è stato presentato prima di tutto come il primo SoC con una certa attenzione al 5G: nonostante questa tecnologia ci metterà ancora qualche anno prima di diffondersi capillarmente, siamo ufficialmente entrati nella fase in cui le aziende si preparano all'avvento del nuovo standard. Lo Snapdragon 855, infatti, sarà il primo chip commerciale con supporto al multi-gigabit 5G e, dal palco delle Hawaii, Samsung ha annunciato che nella prima metà del prossimo anno lancerà negli Stati Uniti il primo smartphone con supporto alle reti 5G (qualcuni ha detto Galaxy S10?). Oltre l'azienda coreana, Qualcomm ha annunciato che 18 aziende adotteranno il nuovo chip, tra cui Google, Xiaomi, LG, Samsung, Motorola, Sony e tanti altri.
Tra le altre importanti novità, il nuovo SoC triplicherà le performance delle operazioni di Intelligenza Artificiale. Tra gli altri aspetti, ne beneficerà la fotocamera: grazie ai miglioramenti della computer vision, possiamo aspettarci miglioramenti nelle foto notturne e riconoscimento automatico dei soggetti degli scatti.
Inoltre, il chip di Qualcomm gode di un'ottimizzazione per i videogiochi, grazie ad una nuova piattaforma chiamata Snapdragon Elite Gaming, di cui però non sono stati annunciati i dettagli.
Dulcis in fundo, con lo Snapdragon 855 probabilmente i lettori di impronte sotto il display diventeranno uno standard: Qualcomm, infatti, ha svelato il 3D Sonic Sensor, nuovo brand per il lettore di impronte ad ultrasuoni dell'azienda, che promette di funzionare anche con display sporchi o protetti da pellicole.
Come era stato largamente anticipato, lo Snapdragon 855 è realizzato da TSMC con processo costruttivo a 7 nanometri; secondo quanto precedentemente riportato, il chip ha architettura octa-core (4 core a risparmio energetico con clock a 1,78 GHz, e 4 core orientati alle performance, di cui tre con clock fino a 2,42 GHz e uno fino a 2,84 Ghz). La GPU dovrebbe essere una Adreno 640 e la connettività sarà affidata al modem Snapdragon X24 LTE, a cui si aggiunge lo Snapdragon X50, per il supporto al 5G. Qualcomm, Global Mobile Operators and OEMs Usher in a Decade of Multi-Gigabit 5G Connectivity with First Live 5G Networks and Devices in Hawaii

Hawaii — December 4, 2018 — During the first day of the annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), brought together global mobile operators AT&T, EE, Telstra and Verizon; global infrastructure provider Ericsson; global network infrastructure and mobile device leader Samsung; and device makers Motorola, NETGEAR and Inseego, to introduce the first commercial 5G mobile platform, Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855 Mobile Platform. The companies showcased live 5G networks and mobile devices to usher in a new era of multi-gigabit connectivity powered by 5G, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi– a truly end-to-end experience featuring devices, experiences and networks. These landmark achievements are the result of Qualcomm mobile leadership and breakthrough inventions over decades, leading the world to 3G, 4G and now 5G by driving an end-to-end system approach that spans from research and development to commercialization through a series of essential inventions and industry-first prototypes, demos, trials, chipsets and mobile platforms.
During a keynote address, Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated, discussed the progress and leadership Qualcomm Technologies has shown on the path to commercialization of 5G. He described how 5G will be a commercial reality starting in early 2019 with mobile device launches and network rollouts across North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia and China. Amon also reviewed how Qualcomm Technologies is uniquely positioned to propel 5G deployments with the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, the Snapdragon X50 5G modem family and Qualcomm® QTM052 mmWave antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end and antenna elements — helping OEMs address the exponential increase in device design complexity that comes with 5G in both sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands.
“Today marks a massive and exciting step forward underscoring how Qualcomm Technologies and ecosystem leaders are driving 5G commercialization, a journey that went from R&D, accelerated standardization and trials, the launch of innovative products and technologies, to the imminent launch of 5G networks and smartphones across the globe starting in early 2019,” said Amon. “Together we are demonstrating our role in transforming the mobile industry and enriching consumer experiences with 5G mobile devices on live 5G networks at this year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit.”
Amon was then joined on stage by senior executives from global mobile operators AT&T, EE and Verizon, who discussed in more detail their 5G deployment plans. Nicki Palmer, chief network engineering officer at Verizon, discussed Verizon’s 5G strategy and the importance of collaboration in making 5G a reality; Kevin Petersen, senior vice president, wireless product marketing at AT&T, highlighted 5G commercialization along with the industries & key consumer experiences that will drive demand for the next generation mobile network; Fotis Karonis, executive advisor for 5G at BT Group, discussed how 5G will roll out across the UK in 2019, address challenges that LTE currently faces and introduce new customer experiences. Additionally, at the event, Qualcomm Technologies, AT&T and Verizon turned on live millimeter wave 5G networks and showcased a number of 5G consumer experiences powered by the Snapdragon X50 5G Modem and RF subsystem. Telstra is scheduled to share an exciting 5G update during the second day of the summit.
